Kemi Badenoch accuses Andy Burnham o ‘fiddlin while Europe risks burnin’

Kemi Badenoch has accused Andy Burnham o fiddlin while Europe is at risk o burnin, as she repeated her call for the prime minister tae cut the walfare budget in order tae fund an increase in defence spendin.

Speakin in the press, the Tory leader said that Burnham may be a pleaser o folk but difficult choices canna be avoided through dither and delay. She said the government had tae fund our defence richt, at a time when umwhile military chiefs hae raised questions concernin Britain and its preparedness for war.

Badenoch said: Our government is fiddlin while Europe is at risk o burnin. In France and Poland, leaders are takin action now against the growin Russian threat. What is our government doin? Has onybody heard a cheep frae Wes Streeting, the umwhilie head o the National Union o Students, who has arrived as defence secretary?

Discourse on the walfare versus warfare debate has grown louder in recent days since Burnham remarks durin the prime minister questions on 9 September that national security cud nae come at the expense o social security.

The Tory leader said Burnham was sendin a dangerous message that he wad nae cut walfare tae fund the military, which was heard loud and clear in Moscow as weel as Manchester. She added: We hae tae stop pretendin that we are livin in a carefree end o history when Russia is testin our resolve week after week. It is time tae get serious.

The UK has promised tae commit 3.5 per cent o national income tae defence by 2035, in line wi a pledge by Nato members, but there is growin pressure on the chancellor, John Healey, tae outline how further increases will be achieved afore the budget next month.

Admiral Lord West, a former security minister under Gordon Brown, said Britain military was in a gey parlous state. In mony ways, ane cud argue we are already at war. We are certainly in the grey zone – whether it is cyber-attacks, drones gettin near the edge o somewhere or threats tae underwater cables, he added.

Lord Dannatt, a former chief o the general staff, said: My bottom line is that Andy Burnham, and regretfully I wad now add John Healey, are playin fast and loose wi the nation security.

The Conservatives hae proposed cappin housin benefit tae raise 4 billion punds tae spend on defence. The party has rejected suggestions that the policy wad mak folk homeless but suggested some wad hae tae move somewhere cheaper. The Tories will haud their annual conference in Birmingham in twa weeks.
